Signal wins 2021 AIA Honor Award

The rehabilitation of Building 305 was recognized twice in the 2021 Seattle AIA Honor Awards – first by the Young Voices Committee, and then with an Honor Award. Of 103 submittals, the selection committee identified 16 projects that exhibited a “high level of design excellence in projects that delight, inspire and enrich their communities all while having a positive impact on the environment.” We are honored for this recognition in our vibrant design community and appreciate our team’s efforts for this meaningful project.

Quotes from the jurors include:

“The duality of the historic landmark building – we appreciated the precise technical approach to understanding the layers of history of the building and honoring those, and on the other end the resulting building is an adaptable and open ended, programmatically generous building.” and “We appreciated this…archaeological approach to restoring different layers – this approach welcomes a generosity and sense of discovery of the interiors.” – Sharon Johnston, Johnston Marklee

“There is an inherent process here that is replicable – a roadmap is established by this project that embodies very high design principles and a site-specific look at the existing building.” – Katherine Darnstadt, Latent Design

“The team understood the original passive strategies of how it was built in the 1800s and revealed them again. They didn’t force new infrastructure systems into the building in a way that compromised that simplicity of the structure. In a way if future proofed itself.” – Helena Zambrano, Mahlum

We are grateful to the collaborative design, construction, and owner team for the opportunity to rehabilitate this facility and imagine its life for the next century.
