Between Camp and Coast
People
Lakebay is a retreat, sitting at a liminal edge between forest and sea, becoming a place that simultaneously inspired quiet observation and robust gathering. Adjacent to a beloved summer camp, the life for the building is phased. The next decade will see it used as a family retreat for friends and stewards of the camp. Subsequent uses will be a retreat for residencies and study – from art and poetry to marine science and psychology. Creating a place at the edge of the land draws on human instincts of prospect and refuge as a retreat for clarity and belonging.
Architecture
Elevated above the sandy ground, the building rises up on the footprint of an original caretaker structure. With gathering spaces that open to the beach and small bedrooms above, the compact footprint is versatile in all seasons, acting as a basecamp in the active water sports months and a cozy shelter when the rains return to the Salish Sea.
Research
Development on a sensitive site takes careful consideration. Setbacks, footprints, access, and systems are considered, coordinated, and affirmed with agencies to verify compliance. Budgets are closely watched, and early engagement with builders reveals potential constructability challenges that effect schedule and budget.
The constraints make this property special and working within the confines elevate the shoreline property to its highest experiential potential. Everything is essential, with nothing extra.
